Here is the second item selected for the online museum. This little item
caught my eye at a local estate sale. It was purchased from the Ruby
Chaffee estate in the Summer of 2010. At first I didn't know what it was
but it is in the shape of a log cabin and appears to be dated 1949.
Beings it is a log cabin and the 1949 date I could only think of one
thing. Maybe this is a souvenir of the 1949 Minnesota Territorial
Centennial Celebration of which Martin County held a four day long
shindig in July of that year and the local communities held their own at
various times during the year.
Ruby moved to the Granada Minnesota area in 1920 and was a teacher in
Martin County for many years. With her husband, Fenton, they would
certainly have attended if not participated in this territorial
anniversary. This miniature log cabin is an incense burner. Once the
incense was lit and dropped down the chimney it would have looked like
smoke was coming out of the chimney. Is this a novelty from the Martin
County Minnesota territorial celebration?
