Welcome to the Granada Historical Museum's virtual museum. We hope
to feature an item online here and change it at least once a month.
The envelope above arrived in the mail in February 2010. This rather
poignant item was a surprise to see. It managed to survive all these
years and even more surprising it has never been opened since 1943 -
67 years ago. It is undecided if it should be opened, so we decide
to post this and get some input. Please email
granadaminn(at)hotmail.com and let us know your thoughts.
This little envelope is a sad reminder of what World War II did to
friends and family. This was sent to Lt George Winzenburg and really
pulls at the heartstrings because of the news it bears to the
sender. Clinton Johnson, vice president of the Fairmont Railway
Motors sent this on November 2, 1943 and Lt Winzenburg was reported
as Missing in Action just three days later on November 5th. The
Martin County WWII memorial book lists that he was in a bombing raid
over Muenster, Germany when this happened.
Almost two years later Lt George Winzenburg was recorded as dead and
buried in a US Military cemetery in Belgium on August 25, 1945.
This was found in Clinton Johnson's papers by his nephew, William
Wheeler. His uncle passed away in 1970.
If you have any more information or suggestions, please email,
thanks.
